SAMHAIN RITUAL

All Hallow's Eve

By Starr Ravenhawk
Halloween.
Sly does it. Tiptoe catspaws. Slide and creep.
But why? What for? How? Who? When! Where did it all begin?
'You don't know, do you?' asks Carapace Clavicle Moundshroud climbing out
under the pile of leaves under the Halloween Tree. 'You don't REALLY know!'
by Mike Nichols --Ray Bradbury
from 'The Halloween Tree'

3-5PM

IN THE GARDEN AT AVENUE C AND EAST 9TH

STREET IN THE EAST VILLAGE

Samhain. All Hallows. All Hallow's Eve. Hallow E'en. Halloween. The most magical night of the year, Samhain is the best-loved Sabbat for many of us, sometimes called 'THE Great Sabbat.'
Exactly opposite Beltane on the wheel of the year, Halloween is Beltane's dark twin. A 'spirit night', as they say.

The dark half of the year commences on this night. The Witches' New Year's Eve, as well as the third and final harvest festival in the Wheel of the Year.

A night of power, when the veil that separates the worlds of the living from the Otherworld of the dead, becomes its thinnest.  A night to remember deceased loved ones and honor ancestors.

Samhain is a night that exists outside of time and hence it may be used to view any other point in time.
Not only is Samhain the end of autumn; it is also, more importantly, the end of the old year and the beginning of the new. These two themes, celebrating the dead and divining the future, are inexorably intertwined in Samhain, as they are likely to be in any New Year's celebration.

Witches leave out a candle to guide loved ones home, a glass of wine to remind them that they are loved and remembered and a cake to remind them of the sweetness of life that we shared together. But this is not a sad time, for we have our loved ones back for a little and so love and laughter, song, dance and drama, are the order of the season, a time to celebrate.

All are welcome of whatever path you follow, to share together the power of The Goddess and God, if you are a newcomer, whether Pagan, Witch, Druid or Shaman or have as yet not found your path.

Bring with you pictures or such of your loved ones and come ready to do your Paper of Regrets, to place into the cauldron to be burnt, ready to start a new page in your book of life.  For this is a time to ponder on and celebrate the Dark Mysteries of ourselves and nature, reflected in the wonderful salve of the Crone and the God of the Underworld.

Samhain is also known as Halloween, All Hallow's Eve, Hallowmas, Day of the Dead, Third Harvest, Hallowstide, and Celtic New Year.

Spell/ritual work: astral projection, past life recall, Dark Moon mysteries, mirror spells, scrying, protection, inner work, clearing obstacles, transition, culmination, transformation. Releasing bad habits and toxic relationships, illness, failure and poverty; everything you do not want to carry into the new year.

BRING HAND INSTRUMENTS -- drums, flutes, tambourines, claves, maracas, etc.  AS IT IS A GREAT TIME FOR DANCING AND MERRIMENT.

Attire:  suggested attire color white, black, yellow, orange (not required for attendance).

A fee of $15.00 in person $16.00 via online payments is required. (please bring receipt of online payment).

Brief Explanation of the Moon Phases

The phases of the moon are caused by the relative positions of the earth, sun, and moon. The moon goes around the earth in 27.3 days, or 27 days 7 hours 43 minutes, on average. This measurement is relative to the stars and is called the sidereal period or orbital period. However, because of the earth's motion around the sun, a complete moon cycle (New Moon to New Moon) appears to earthbound observers to take a couple of days longer: 29.5305882 days to be exact. This number is called the synodic period or "lunation", and is relative to the sun.

The sun always illuminates the half of the moon facing the sun (except during lunar eclipses, when the moon passes thru the earth's shadow). When the sun and moon are on opposite sides of the earth, the moon appears "full" to us, a bright, round disk. When the moon is between the earth and the sun, it appears dark, a "new" moon. In between, the moon's illuminated surface appears to grow (wax) to full, then decreases (wanes) to the next new moon.

The edge of the shadow (the terminator) is always curved, being an oblique view of a circle, giving the moon its familiar crescent shape. Because the "horns" of the moon at the ends of the crescent are always facing away from the setting or rising sun, they always point upward in the sky. It is fun to watch for paintings and pictures which show an "impossible moon" with the horns pointed downwards.

MOON PHASES

The Moon's phases are one of the few cosmic factors whose influence on terrestrial life has been more or less acknowledged by official science, at least in relation to the full moon. Official reports have shown that at the full moon, the amount of crimes goes up, and there is often an increase in the number of calls for ambulances and public unrest. Also, I have heard from surgeons who take their work very seriously, that they do not like to undertake operations during the full moon because there is often a more than usual amount of bleeding and inflammation. Yet at the same time, wise people in the villages say that it is much better to cut hair on the full moon because it will become stronger.

I have tried to accumulate on this website all the available wisdom about the moon's phases, as well as detailed information about the times of their past and future occurrence. This should allow you to observe the moon's phases and to make your own mind up about whether to consider them as a cosmic factor in your everyday life.

New Moon

A time of lull, the completion of old activities and the preparation of new ones. Everything is in decline now - life energy, emotions and physiological activity. For this reason, any projects which require significant effort are not advisable now. This is an inauspicious time for people with low blood pressure and those prone to depression.

First Quarter of the Moon

A stressful period of time when there is a strong desire to accomplish something, to change, and to show oneself. However, before undertaking anything, first stop and think: is it really needed? Obstacles multiply at this time and contradictions sharpen. Plans developed under this influence often turn out to be unrealistic because people tend to overvalue their abilities.

Full Moon

A period of excess when everything in nature brims over. Emotions, psychic energy, physiological activity - everything is at its maximum. This is the time of increased creativity, but with those who are prone to high blood pressure, epilepsy or over excitement, this Full Moon period can be problematic.

A stressful and unsettled period. Your ambitions are being stirred up and there is a desire to do something very important and show everyone how cool you are. However, the best way forward is to think thoroughly before doing anything and to direct your energy towards jobs planned earlier, rather than ideas which have just sprung into your head now.

Solar Eclipses

A solar eclipse occurs during the new moon. The moon blocks the sun’s energies as it passes directly between the sun and the earth. During the month of a solar eclipse, you should start noticing the energies of an upcoming eclipse right after the previous new or full moon. Emotional truths can be revealed and emotions can run rampant. All signs will be viewing life from a different perspective during this time.

It will be difficult for us to be objective. All signs will take things personally during this phase. Deep feelings can come to the surface unexpectedly. This blocked and ambiguous energy will intensify until the actual eclipse date, and will resume to normalcy after about three to four days of the eclipse date. It’s best to plan in advance for the eclipse since our natural rhythms are “out of order” during this time.

All signs will be feeling the effects of the eclipses differently. Depending on where the eclipse falls in your horoscope, you will be dealing with issues associated with that house. If the eclipse falls in the fifth house, the emphasis will be on love affairs and children. If it occurs in the seventh house, the emphasis will be on marriage and legal issues. If it occurs in the ninth house, there might be a change of residence or plans for long distance travel.

Typically, this is not the time to make any major changes. If an eclipse (Lunar or Solar) falls in your sign, on your birthday or close to it (within three to five days), you are due for major changes in your life this year. Perhaps you will end one relationship for another, or you could decide to move. The idea is to shake up the status quo in that particular area of your life.

Eclipses have been known over the years as a time of both beginnings and endings. They also signify change in your life on a massive scale. Embrace change and realize that for every door that closes, another opens. It’s all for the best.

Lunar Eclipses

A lunar eclipse occurs during a full moon when the earth moves exactly between the sun and moon, breaking up their natural monthly opposition. Normally, the earth is not on a level plane; otherwise eclipses would occur every month.

During a lunar eclipse, the earth “short-circuits” the connection between the sun and moon. The effect on us can be confusion or clarity.

This is a great time to change destructive emotional patterns such as toxic relationships or addictions. On the flipside, a lunar eclipse can bring on some insecurity within our personal lives. Realize that all signs will feel the effects of the eclipse differently.

It’s imperative to remember that everything is meant to happen for a reason, no matter how stressful or confusing things appear on the surface. Eclipses are designed to change our lives around for the better. Remember that without change, there would be no growth.

Karmic Moon

Your Karmic Moon is the planet immediately clockwise to the moon in your natal (birth) astrology chart.  That planet is important to know as it depicts your innate strengths, talents, gifts, and unique essence that you bring to this life and have to give to this world.  It represents the knowledge and the tools you use to work through though times and has a message of growth and learning for you and your future.  The first planet clockwise from your sun in your birth chart is called the Oriental planet and its energies delineate what spiritual foundation in life you need to complete – your purpose – and what has to be done in this lifetime.
